I still find it hard to believe this was done almost 60 years ago with a computer 1/1000 the power of an iPhone.

In hindsight, it's kind of wild how reckless that was.

But also, it's kind of disappointing how little our space exploration has advanced since then. I hope all the excitement around the Artemis II crew inspires more investment.

In my view, no real progress will be made until nations get together for the good of "mankind". Sending 10 different rockets with 10 different country flags is pointless.

I understand why sci-fi books almost always start after the point where humanity has pooled our resources together for the good of all, because it's hard to imagine our planet doing anything on a galactic scale when we can't even get our shit together on planet.

In my view, no real progress will be made until nations get together for the good of "mankind". Sending 10 different rockets with 10 different country flags is pointless.

Competition during the space race did push for a lot of innovation and such though. And sometimes competition doesn’t have to be only reinventing things that have already been done. For example, we have information and data about Mars from the US that the Soviets never obtained since they didn’t peruse Martian research much, and we have information and data from Venus that the US never got because they didn’t really try to go after studying Venus. But I do think you have a point also, after all, the most enduring symbol and most consistently prominent space object (the ISS) was a joint US-USSR undertaking, and the crew since has always been very international. Even when relations with the countries has gotten bad.
