it's mainly bc for a lot of these ppl they've had experiences where their hair was equated to being dirty and ugly for a long time that seeing these styles in pop culture being glorified rubs them the wrong way. you can sympathize with that. sure one race doesn't own a hairstyle, but they're primarily associated with these styles and when they're associated with them it's often times seen negatively.

it's just the way ppl complain about this turns others off. a lot of them are unreasonable, and so many of them aren't even black. we shouldn't live in a world where instead of encouraging ppl to see others as equal we tear them down for liking what they like. a lot of ppl go to these hairstyles bc they like them after all.

Like peoples argument used to be only rapper get given dreads...

so company's are given them to the dancer the vocalist etc...

i.e chenle from dream one of the youngest members and sweet and kind who is a vocalist

and now he is getting hate...

I think people are taking this whole thing to a extreme because i think everyone has had braids in some shape or form in there life no matter the race

if they want people to support the hairstyle and it not treated badly you should support other races wearing it thats how things get accepted not by making people hate the hairstyles by hating on everything people love purely cause someone not black has a certain hairstyle

im just going call everyone who claims the hairstyle for black people now racist cause it is.. they are the only race claiming a hairstyle

look im not disagreeing with you but you're also looking at this insensitively. yes everyone has had braids in some shape or form in their life no matter the race but only some ppl have negative stereotypes associated with those braids and that has to do with race. so saying you're going to call everyone who claims the hairstyle for black people now racist isn't right bc we should at least acknowledge why they might have a problem with it.

no one deserves hate for wearing their hair that way. no one deserves to be cancelled for it. i think people have grown big heads since they're behind a screen and can get internet points for attacking people. but there are plenty of reasonable people who are fine with other races wearing braids, as long as they understand why it's a big deal for black people.

so while no one deserves hate for wearing their hair that way we should also remember that black people with these hair styles get discriminated all the time just bc they're black.

Whilst the braids themselves aren’t racist, South Korea is still massively ignorant of the connotations. It’s like picking and choosing certain things from a race that you like and fashioning it to suit you. If we lived in a world where racism didn’t exist this wouldn’t be a problem, but we do and so it’s not appropriate.
This is also where I wish idols had more input into their images for comebacks. When Kai had them for Kokobop he asked for people to not hate his hair, because he knew why he’d get the backlash, but SM chose to do it anyway. Kpop companies need to learn that if they want their acts to be known worldwide, they need to learn about the world.

but don't you think having other cultures embrace aspects of another is going to help combat that ignorance? sure its picking and choosing, but it's still opening up people to appreciate something they might have been conditioned to dislike previously. and it's not like that's all sm does. they include poc in their mvs. they include them amongst their staff. they understand the world. what troubles me is kai having to point that out knowing he'll get eaten alive for something they didn't do maliciously.

Honestly the people who complain about braids and dreads on a celebrity are being very short-sighted and while it's true there is a negative history behind them. Sometimes it doesn't hurt to view the bigger picture though which is that celebrities wearing these hairstyles will get them normalised so that the negative connotation around them is gone and at the end of the day shouldn't that be the end goal?

yea a lot of ppl go too far attacking ppl. and it sucks that on one hand they feel like people don't understand why they feel a certain way, but they can't acknowledge that the ppl they are attacking aren't trying to hurt them at all and are showing appreciation to something they find cool, and instead of throwing vitriol at them they should see it from their perspective too. but honestly the ppl who act this way are in the minority at least. sane ppl don't use twitter :wimwim:

It's a situation where I don't think either sides base is wrong as on one side they wanna use it because they do appreciate it and on the other is based on fear of people taking it but still trashing black people or even the black history of it being pushed to the side and it being claimed as a white thing which you can't say are baseless fears but fighting over it is definitely not the solution.

is it being claimed as a white thing? i think in most cases ppl are claiming it's just not a black thing. and i get that sentiment but yea they should also understand why for black ppl its more important than for others.

Maybe, but it goes back to South Korea’s way of thinking. They still think blackface is ok to do as long as they apologise afterwards and ‘reflect’. With Kai he knew he was going to get stick. I don’t know if he told SM’s hair stylist team about the connotations, but he himself knew and had no choice but to go along with it. I can’t speak for black people as I’m not black, but until Korea accepts black people as a whole, they have every right to complain. The other problem is that kpop is becoming bigger in the west. I don’t really tweet much kpop, but non-fans I’ve known for years know I’m a fan and tag me in random kpop stuff they see. There’s always the risk other non-kpop fans will see stuff and think they are doing it maliciously.

from what im aware korean gag shows that did blackface didn't apologize but they've stopped doing it. i think it goes a long way that more and more poc are being invited onto shows and expanding people's worldview. but my problem isn't that it's just them having a right to complain or not. it's the extent to which a lot of ppl do it (a lot of ppl who aren't black either but just feel the need to 'educate' others). it feels like discouraging artists or going as far as trying to trend hashtags calling them out from wearing their hair a certain way is counter productive and harmful as well. change doesn't happen in steps right...it all happens together. i hope poc are accepted better in korea. not just black people but non-asians in general. but to discourage something "until korea accepts ____" isn't really going to progress anything either imo.

I don't think it's specifically being claimed as a white thing at the moment but it is a possibility that could drive some to be defensive of it. I would say that it is a black thing since but it can be a black thing without being the sole focus of it which is really the problem compared to say hip hop which while people know it's a black thing, there is no problem when other people do it because people don't focus on that, they just treat it as music.

sure but everyone has their own experiences. i had a friend once who had braids in. and she said that she doesn't wash her hair often to protect it. and that made total sense to me bc i try not to wash my hair too often either for similar reasons. but i remember saying what she told me about her hair to some other people and they pretty much automatically assumed she was dirty for it. and i can't help thinking it's bc she's a certain race. so i can understand that their perspective is going to be different. and that ppl would be annoyed that others can get away with having the aesthetic of braids without the negative connotations that come with it.

The sad thing is it feels like a lot of people are educating themselves more through social media nowadays rather than at school, some are unfortunately learning the hard way. My nephew is in a school that’s incredibly diverse, and he’s learnt a lot about various religions and races (in terms a 5yr old will understand). He’s lucky in that sense, but I hope education for his generation is better and will lead to more acceptance for everybody in society.

yea definitely! it goes a long way being around diverse ppl too. i think we can at least be happy that the world is progressing to a better and more inclusive place.

I've seen someone mention black face and comedy shows. One thing people over look there is another blackface in Asian countries. Still not nice but not every black face references black people. It refered to people who worked hard in the fields in the sun who were seen as poor and undesirable. If you where rich and well off, and who doesn't like rich and well off people, you were more able to avoid the sun and thus avoid getting a deep tan.

As for dreads it's the closest thing we have to cultural appropriation. To say it's black only while trying to ignore and silence history is pretty much the definition of that fake term. Remember dreads for black people started to have strong roots with Rastafarian religion which is a Abrahamic religion founded in Jamaica around the 1930s. 1930 is not anywhere close to the earliest recorded usage of braids in hair.

Personally I think people just need to stop whining and remember in and of it's self braids/cornrows/and what not in human history is something quite interesting to follow. Just stop complaining and embrace history it's freaking amazing.
