The poet that made Paul Revere famous had a very different grandfather (1 Viewer)

Henry Longfellow is famous for his poetry, including his poem “Paul Revere’s Ride”, which made Paul Revere a very well known and liked figure among Americans. His grandfather, on the other hand was Peleg Wadsworth, who did not have a high opinion of Paul Revere at all.

Both of them fought in the Massachusetts Militia as officers in the Penobscot expedition in 1779, Wadsworth as the second in command of ground forces and Revere in charge of artillery. The expedition went extremely badly, and afterwards some officers (including Peleg Wadsworth) raised charges against Paul Revere that included neglect of duty, insubordination, and cowardice. Wadsworth testified against Revere, saying that Revere had refused to follow orders from both him and the first in command of ground forces. After 3 years, Revere would go through a court-martial proceeding for it that ultimately had Revere acquitted.

So the grandson of one of the officers that tried to have Revere punished for his actions during the battle would be the one to immortalize Paul Reveres actions during the midnight ride. It’s quite an interesting coincidence
