Passion alone doesn't always work out. But hard work in everything you do leads to more opportunities.

So there's always a randomness factor, but it's still a good mindset to have.

Hard work needs to be coupled with long-term persistence, vigilance and passion. Don't expect hard work to pay off immediately and also don't work hard because you expect to be rewarded. Hard work is its own reward, IMO. It can take years for it to actually pay off and be recognized.. and sometimes it never gets rewarded... and that's OK... however, in my experience, working hard is definitely the way to go through life.

Yes, there are times when passion alone isn't sufficient.

And there are situations where you are mentally healthier by not getting passionate about something. Like, for example, a project that everyone says is going to get cancelled.

Yes, if only wanting it really bad was enough to make everything come together. :( I think of work as a necessarily, but not sufficient component. No one is going to break into your room and force success on you, but just because you try really hard, that doesn't mean you'll get it either. You have to find a way to be okay with the process, without a guarantee of the outcome.
