The word influenza, later shortened to flu, came from the 15th century literary Italian word for influence. This came from the belief that the sickness came as a result of the influences or planets and stars and such.

when I first saw influenza as a sickness (it was on some drug's info page in a magazine, and yes, I was, in fact, bored lol), I was soooooooo confused. like, how bad is "influence" that it has to be listed as a side effect? and what kind of influence were we talking? lol but thden again, I was a tween at the time, so I didn't really know any better lol
