The Statue of Liberty has a broken chain by her foot, symbolizing abolition of slavery in the US. But originally, the chain was much more prominent, being held in her left hand. This has led people to believe that the change was made because the original was deemed too explicitly about abolition and controversial for Americans, though there are other theories. However, there is no definite proof for any single theory, though no one really argues that political tensions at the time played absolutely no role at all.
