The term Supreme Pontiff predates Christianity (1 Viewer)

Supreme Pontiff is one of the official titles held by the Pope. Meaning supreme bridge builder, it highlights the position of the Pope as being the bridge between God and the faithful. However, the term Pontifex Maximus (Supreme Pontiff in Latin) predates Christianity, originally being used for the high priest in Ancient Rome. The Catholic Church first adopted the term as a title of the pope during the third century.
