Morphine used to be seen as a legitimate way to cure people of opium and alcohol addictions. Eventually, people realized that morphine was even more addictive than opium. Thereby making it useless to “cure” other addictions. So scientists brought in their new non addictive substitute for morphine: heroin. You know, the totally non addictive drug They tried? Yep! In the US it’s a schedule 2 drug, which means it’s very restricted, but isn’t outright considered to have no reasonable medical use like schedule 1 drugs. Of course it’s treated as an absolute last choice due to being so addictive though. But it can be prescribed under the name Desoxyn for ADHD and very rarely obesity treatments. But it’s very rarely prescribed to anyone at all because of how risky it is.
