For those who don’t know, the main meaning is to align yourself in relation to something. However, in the past, it was more specific. In the early 1700s, it meant to align something specifically facing east. Hence why it also has relation to words like oriental. The direction east was important to people in older times (especially if they didn’t have compasses) because the sun rises in the east. Because of that, you get words like orient and some cultures placed east as the top of a map and so on.
