The word escalator is older than escalate (1 Viewer)

While many people may assume that the word escalator comes from the verb escalate, it’s actually the other way around. Escalator dates back to 1900, used for the moving staircase, while escalate dates to 1922, originally meaning to use an escalator. Escalate eventually replaced the earlier verb escalade, which was the verb that escalator was derived from.

So escalate basically ate the original escalade through the test of time. That gives me hope for my personal least favorite English word "apologist" to soak up a different meaning too, because today apologist as a word doesn't signal the meaning of the word in fact does the exact opposite.
