things are getting heated in the translations fandom (1 Viewer)

from what I'm gathering:

• wordexcerpt is an english publisher of korean, japanese, and chinese webnovels
• they start tweeting about bringing over some high profile danmeis like saye to translate and distribute
• this causes a mess on danmeitwt because some are concerned about the translation quality of their chinese works (they edit machine translations) while others think that seven seas shouldn't "get a monopoly on english danmei" never mind that they really only have 9 works licensed (which to be fair, are high profile works)
• people realize that some of wordexcerpts stuff isn't legally licensed and that they stole various artists' art for their book covers
• they start blaming outsourced chinese localization companies for overlooking the legality of their translation work?
• wordexcerpt ceo sockpuppets start popping up everyone defending we, someone calls them out for their sockpoppets + racefaking, ceo accuses them of doxxing

edited mtl is usually decently easy to spot imo because it simply doesn’t have that same flow that htl has if you know what I mean

true, but still better something than nothing. I have read a really weird translation of SVSS and couldn´t enjoy it as well as if it had been polished a bit, but hey at least someone tried and while not completely legal... I still thank them for their time.

it's a bit better for modern day stuff but I ran through the wind blows through changlin into mtl once and it... was not pretty let's leave it at that
fan tls are a weird space to navigate, but I do think officially publishing for profit without the proper licenses and whatever is iffy
if it's a fan tl with donations open I think that's fine, there's no direct profiting

it´s a real mess both ways :D. the quality and the shady business that people are doing. I knew someone whose fan translation was stolen and made money of which is a sad thing, but as you have said if a fan does the translation and you know it is a fan translation and they only run on donations. those people are amazing

seven seas do kinda have a "monopoly" on translations. mostly cause theyre the only ones doing it (doing it well at least, hahahaha) . you cant argue that 2ha and mxtx's 3 books are far and away the most popular works in the eng fandom
so far, i dont think seven seas have done anything that makes their domination of the fandom bad, but i think i would like it if more companies started translating and publishing.

even in the chinese sphere they're massive ips too; they really hit it lucky snagging the mega popular franchises first

via lactea is cute, not a big fan of the ips they've gotten but their designs are really pretty
