The words cult and culture come directly from the same root word. What does that say about culture for those two to be closely related? They actually come from a meaning of growing or cultivating, but both went a theoretical emotional route instead of literal like the word cultivate itself.

When you think about it, did cults or did cultures come first. I would say cults had big part in forming cultures over time. what is and isnt an cult is subjective. Especially when you think of all the time humans have had time to pick up teachings, traditions, ideals and beliefs from something that originally was from a cult.

I think it would depend on which definitions you use. Since cult is a word that has changed meaning a lot, you can still find places where things are called “cults”, typically religious orders, but they aren’t cults in a negative way like the word became. Culture has had shifts too ofc. But in terms of how old the words are, culture comes first. And realistically culture in a modern understanding is probably much older too, just because what’s truly considered a cult relies on a systematic aspect to it that older peoples weren’t able to do, particularly pre Neolithic agricultural revolution that led to the rise of towns and cities Though they can still be tied of course, there have certainly been cults that influenced a group of people and their culture. In fact, I would assume that most, if not all cults, have caused very strong cultural shifts in people.
