I diagree that its as decided as you say. Ofc for the most part, the company has a clear idea, as those trainees may have trained there for many years already (at least in the past, nowadays not so much anymore). But the surivial show still adds other elements, that can be taken into account, e.g. public perception of the trainees or singing in front of a big audience. So if some trainees do expecintally well or bad in that regard, the opinions can change. I think Minyoung from Sixteen is a good exampel for a candidate that was set, but lost her spot during the show, while others that were not the agencies favorites at the start, made the group in the end.

overall i guess it's all decided by the company in charge. probably the best thing to do is not to watch the show, and to stan the group afterwards and THEN maybe watch some clips. that's what i am doing for twice and fromis_9 (though i still have a decent-ish idea about what went on in those shows) ahaha. some members of groups that debuted from in-house survival shows (i'm talking about pentagon and monsta x here specifically) have mentioned that those shows were traumatic experiences for them, and pentagon members have explicitly told their fans not to watch pentagon maker, the show they came from. just shows that it's all in the company's hands and they're messing with a bunch of young people's brains :(

Again points I like about A2K, as everything was filmed long in advance, there is no need to even pretend that the audience has any say and also I feel like JYP learned from this past mistakes with changing the amount of final members and now just says from the start, their is no fixed number.

I never watched other survival shows apart from Sixteen so far, so I don't know what traumatizing events happend in other shows, but to me many things that happend on Sixteen did not make sense from JYPs point of view. The agency cannot have any interest, to have their upcoming superstars like Nayeon evil edited in the way MNET did, so I'm failry confident in saying that most of the really nasty things that happend during those survival shows are cuased by the TV studios, who force this drama for ratings.

anyway, all will be cool until jyp takes the debuted a2k girlies (including minors ofc) to a korean producer's house who will in many years' time be revealed to be a child predator (i hope you know what i'm referencing here)

as you said agencies may have no hand in all this, it's all tv studios who evil edit... then what about those shows run entirely by tv studios like produce, planet, etc etc? here the agency is the tv studio itself. if you're evil edited, they really don't want you, no matter how much of a star you are. take the example of nu'est's baekho (real name, kang dongho) on produce 101 season 2. fans suspect mnet really wanted a flower boy type image for wanna one, but baekho is tall, buff, and has more "masculine" features. whenever he appeared onscreen, mnet played this bgm which many fans began to call "jungle music" - possibly to rub in the fact that as his stage name suggests, baekho is indeed a white tiger and not a human being, and therefore belongs to the jungle and doesn't deserve to debut (obligatory /s)! here's nu'est's entrance in pd101s2, with jungle music.

in the first video the other guys look like they're terrified of baekho. in the second, they look like they want to marry him. and when all this editing didn't work, with baekho actually receiving enough votes to debut in the final group,,, mnet rigged him out.

also also also. if i'm talking about traumatising experiences on survival shows, i can't not mention idol school - possibly the most fucked up show ever. we're talking severe malnutrition - if a contestant gained weight, they would be restricted to eating only one piece of food for every meal for a week. like, if there were french fries for lunch, someone who had gained weight would receive just one french fry. this very obviously led to the girls' health being majorly fucked up - some girls stopped getting their periods, others had theirs for weeks on end. many developed rashes. they were cut off from all contact with the outside world - they couldn't even tell if it was day or night. one of the girls even tried to escape. to put so many people, mostly young girls, through so much trauma... only for the final lineup being mostly decided long before the show even began airing? absolutely sickening.

no trust me, you're smarter! i just lurk on reddit, nothing much. and of course i was dumb enough to get sucked into boys planet ("i'm doing this only because of hui, as i causally like pentagon", i said... i'll watch only hui's performances", i said...). never watched an episode in its entirety, never voted, but i got attached to a ton of the trainees, currently stan their debut group, listened to a bunch of the other contestants' music releases (so if you need any rookie bg or male solo recs i could point you in a few directions!), and am anticipating the by-product group's debut. what have i come to.

never again, i say.... but some years down the line i may be saying "never again, she said..."

yeah I also think the fact that A2k has no voting and is also not aired on one of the TV stations, but only JYPs youtube channel, probably means it will be a lot less popular vierwship wise.. I guess thats the tradeoff if you want to stay in control.

I do not know what you mean with the producer house, I'm not very knowledgeable, but as JYP always puts great empahize of people having good character, I would hope the producers working for them are also decent people

I think the situation with Nayeon got a little bit better towards the end of sixteen, but I don't think she get any arc like that.. I don't know how much it affected her and is she had issues with her image after debut or if no one cared anymore

Yeah bringing back elimiated contestants always adds a lot of drama and outrage... so I guess thats why they do it.. you can be sure its the talk of the town next day

All the things you mentioned, is why I never would watch any of those TV produced survival shows the clip you showed is really confusing to me, I do not understand whats happening, regardless of which music is used But yeah the vibe is very different for sure, it should never be understimated how much of an effect editing and music can have..
