In 2004, 10 year old Tilly Smith (a British girl) was on a trip to Thailand with her family. This was the date of the biggest tsunami the area had seen since 1883. The water started drastically receding from shore and frothing, a sign that a tsunami was coming. However, people on the beach weren’t familiar with this sign, except Tilly Smith who had just covered tsunamis in her school a couple weeks prior. She told her parents and became very insistent when they brushed off her worry. Eventually, her dad told a security guard nearby, and the ~100 people on the beach were evacuated to a higher area. This beach was one of the only beaches on the west side of the island to record no fatalities.

Her mom actually did refuse to listen, she was the last one to leave the beach because she kept insisting that there was nothing wrong. Hopefully nearly dying taught her a lesson
