Movie Thoughts on the Barbie Movie? (spoilers) (1 Viewer)

I watched the Barbie movie for the first time a few days ago. I meant to watch it while it was still in theaters, but I just didn't have the time to. But then I was waiting for it to be free on streaming and that took like 2 months as if it wasn't bad enough to have to wait for it to even release on streaming, free or not.

But overall, I liked it. The aesthetic and soundtrack were some of the strongest in a film that I've seen in a while. There were also a lot of amazing parts, and I adored the actors' performances, especially Margot Robbie. I love how this movie made me laugh and cry and also made me feel empowered at some moments.

The part where Barbie reached her lowest point was so relatable like omg. Also the part where she looks at an elderly woman and says "You're so beautiful." made me tear up so much. She's lived for hundreds of years and has never aged yet she looks at an older woman and says how beautiful she is. And the way they executed it where she was just admiring everything in the human world and then it pauses and that happens, CHEF'S KISS!!

Also, the ending where Barbie has a one-on-one talk with her creator was something else too. I haven't felt so emotional in a movie in a while and I tear up for a lot of movies lmao.

I also thought the mother-daughter relationship was so sweet on how it ended. And the plot where Barbie has to save the other Barbies is kind of funny. And the way Weird Barbie was sort of accepted into the mix even though she had been made fun of before for the way she looks.

But let's talk about what I didn't like about the movie. The plot was confusing and you spent a while not knowing what the actual plot was.

There are quite a few things I didn't like about this movie. It's a pretty political movie and they don't try to hide it. I get that they're trying to be feminist and there's nothing wrong with that but I almost feel it was a little too much. I honestly thought it was going to end with the Barbies letting the Kens have representation in the Supreme Court and they get along but that didn't happen. They sort of played it off as a joke on how they would get some authority but one rung under the Barbies. I feel bad for the Kens.

Another problem was how legitimately confusing the plot was. It wasn't at all what I was expecting. I thought that Barbie and Ken were going to go to the real world to help Sasha realize the magic of Barbie again and they get caught by Mattel and spend the whole movie trying to escape back to Barbieland. But it wasn't like that. It was still good but I can't be the only one who thought there was no focus on plot. It made it so confusing who the villain actually was because the Mattel CEO didn't seem menacing at all. It's freakin' Will Ferrel and he had like 15 minutes of screentime the whole movie. And just because the Kens had a revolution, they were painted as the villains, or at least, that's what it seemed like to me.

And the controversial moment was when Barbie wasn't feeling perfect or pretty and the narrator was like “Note to film makers: Margot Robbie is not the right person to cast to make this point.” Like I get that Robbie is gorgeous, but everyone can feel not pretty. And it ruined a possibly very sentimental moment between Gloria and Barbie where Gloria tries to lift Barbie up. Like bruh, what was that? Whether it was a joke or not, it made this moment less unrelatable and broke the illusion that you're only watching the movie and not immersing yourself in it. And what if they went with another actress to play Barbie? Would they say the same thing???

Also, how do Barbies really work? Like is it just one person who has a barbie/ken and they control how they act in Barbieland? Like what?

But overall, I would give the movie a 6.5/10. It had redeeming qualities, an amazing aesthetic, great casting, and an immaculate soundtrack (I literally can't get enough of how they got multiple popular artists to do a song). But it also had some plot holes and could be very confusing at times. I also didn't like the way they portrayed the Kens. Good enough to like it but definitely not the movie of the year.

I saw it in theaters, and thought it was great fun. I especially liked the "event" feel of being out at the theaters and seeing so many people excited and wearing pink. Even the men in the audience were wearing pink in their socks or shorts. At my showing, the fire alarm went off at the moment that Allan is psyching himself up to go confront the Kens, so that alarm going off added to the unexpected entertainment of the film.

I went into it just kind of being swept up by everyone's excitement, but not expecting to necessarily love the movie, so I think that helped me get a lot of enjoyment out of it.

Oh that's nice!! It's definitely one of the movies that I would've loved to see in theaters. It's actually coming out again on January 26 for one day only but I just saw it at home so I don't really see the point of watching it again so soon, especially spending extra money on it. Maybe in the future if possible lol
