Blaming the French The French are one of the reasons English lost the second person singular “thou”. You was the second personal plural only. English speakers started to adopt the French habit of using the second person plural (you, or vous in French) as a formal second person singular. Over time, English speakers started to worry about being rude to others, so thou fell out of use for fear of offending someone. And now we’re stuck with one word for second person plural and singular (though some options for plural exist, like y’all).
