On this day marks one of the largest turning points in the twenth century
Given that this took place in Normandy, France, it was here that the the allies would gain the upper hand of the war codenamed operation OVERLORD, eventually become the largest in sea,land and air operation in military history with 156,000 troops on aboard.
This is sometimes known as the beginning of the end of WWII and into the Cold War​

It doesn't seem like historians consider it a turning point, but it was no doubt an important offensive that had important ramifications later on. Many people from many countries on the allied sides absolutely lost their lives in this offensive, particularly from Canada, the UK, and the US. The secrecy and misinformation spread by espionage was seriously impressive as well, and was very successful at tricking the Germans in regard to where the invasion would take place. They really went all out and it paid off, who knows how much longer the war would have taken if not for this offensive and the creation of a western front in Europe again. Respect is definitely due to all who fought on D-Day.
