Recently I’ve been getting obsessed with Tommy heveanly6 - a pop-punk singer from early noughties Japan (2005-ish). I was wondering if there are any fans of her on this board?
If not, check this out:
Although you might be quick to draw comparisons to Avril Lavigne, to do so would be doing a bit of a disfavour to Tomoko Kawase (her real name) - Tommy heavenly6 was her 3rd project after fronting The Brilliant Green in the late 90s and then launching her first solo carrier Tommy February6 shortly after, so she was already quite the established musician at this point in her career and this was a fun new direction to take her sound in.
Arguably, (and in my opinion), she does it a lot better than Avril ever did too. The instrumentation is much closer to the punk-rock they both seek to emulate, sounding more authentic as a result, and she expertly employs a Kawaii-goth aesthetic in her look that makes her music videos hardly seem like they were almost 20 years ago!
If you liked the song posted above, here are some more of my favourites:
Anyway, I’m having a lot of fun exploring her discography. Is anyone else a fan? I would love some pointers as to what you think are her best songs and albums!
