an ancient love song & ripe town
an ancient love song: historical, time travel, romance + fanedit adaptation
synopsis: shen buyan is a leading author about "demon empress" lu yuan. one day, he is handed a jade pendant by an old woman and finds himself dumped into lu yuan's time, causing him to reassess everything history had to say about this woman who acts so peculiarly towards him. what he doesn't know, however, is that they've met before, several times even, in her past and his future. every time he time travels, he can only go further back into lu yuan's past, slowly falling in love with her as she knows less and less about him. the way in which their fate is entangled is the source of their tragedy: she's deeply in love with him when he views her as a stranger, and once he falls deeply in love with her he's just a stranger to her.
it's a small production but evidently made with lots of care. details like the way shen buyan's robes change from white-blue to deep blue as he falls in love with lu yuan over the time travels vs the way lu yuan's robes start out deep red and change to white-pink as she remembers less and less of him, there's so much to discover. (translation of a meta here). the story alone is gorgeous but the true standout imho is main actress zhang yaqin. she's hugely charismatic on screen and plays each lu yuan at each age with such subtlity, she's an absolute joy to watch.
ripe town: historical, mystery, comedy
premise: set in a small town along the yangtze river, the story begins with a murder of a man. that man is the mentor of the main lead, which leads him to embark on a journey of justice along with his friends. currently airing so I can't give a better summary but at least that's the general premise.
for how heavy and serious the mood of the show is, they really do add brilliant bits of comedy in between to break up the tension in the most random of ways. would recommend for that alone, but the drama has some serious visual storytelling with lighting, angles, etc as well as a solid cast so far.
