The Treaty of Ghent, the document that ended the War of 1812, was signed on December 24, 1814 in Ghent, Belgium. A couple weeks later, on January 8th, 1815, the US achieved its biggest victory of the war at the Battle of New Orleans. This was because the US didn’t ratify the treaty until February of that year, but is also common in earlier wars historically because the lack of ways to spread messages quickly. That’s why in the past, fighting often continued among groups who had not yet received the news about the ending of the war they were fighting in.
