I kind of agree with the stan one. I don't understand how it got to be a positive thing, but I still think of the negative association whenever I hear it. I understand that other people have adapted though so I try to use it in positive contexts.

I disagree with the last one. What's wrong with calling any gender beautiful or pretty? We should stop affixing gendered labels to words that don't need them.

I don't really understand the other two.

I absolutely don't agree with the last one. I didn't know cute and beautiful were "only" supposed to be for women. Sometimes they are NOT attractive or handsome, they ARE pretty. That's pretty dumb.

The last one is just weird. 'Pretty' or 'beautiful' are not adjectives to describe only a woman And how are you infantilizing them by calling them pretty or beautiful (but the person said cute is alright lol)?

1. I've never felt comfortable with the word stan but I sometimes use it. If feels like a weird way to apply the term because in my had it should mean to "stand" for something (moral, law, etc). Standing for Apink, BTW, BP, who ever seems weird. I chalk it up to me being positively ancient in k-pop terms. It's just slang. Slang is constantly evolving. This comment honestly feels like an english professor explaining why this new term is wrong based on a 1900 dictionary.

The next two comments I want to address together because they feel related. First lets define Obsession as a hyper-fixation that interfears with a persons basic ability to function and make positive life decisions. Anything and everything can become an obsession. I bet if a normal adult saw my kpop collection and saw how much I love K-pop they might consider me obsessed but; I worked through 4.5 years of college. I have 2 degree's. I go to work. I pay my bills... most of the time. I mostly, I hope, make positive life decisions but I'm not perfect. It's ok to be deeply passionate about anything at any time as long as it's not affecting your ability to make good decisions. Kpop saved me from some really dark times and keeps me going.

The second part of this deals with the dreams of idols. I've always loved to see expertise. I love watching a master blacksmith make an amazing piece of iron work, knife, sword, etc. I also love seeing how idols grow and become better. I love watching their dreams come true. It gives me hope in a really difficult world and I think my love of k-pop makes me a better person. It's no secret the K-pop industry does some really dirty things. Child debt, a poor view of needing mental health treatment, keeping idols from their families; I could honestly go on and on. But every industry has bad actors. I've said it more than a few times. As much as I respect and appreciate what JYP has created... I'd still love to break his nose on behalf of Tzuyu. But being angry about all the bad and writing off kpop hurts more people than it helps. If we all walk away from kpop because it's not perfect far more people get hurt than people get helped. I'm not saying we sacrifice for a few for the many. I'm saying we need to fight for those who got hurt along the way and keep the industry headed in a positive direction but using our voices, and sometimes our money.

Lastly, about the pretty guys. Men can be pretty. Men can be beautiful. Men can be hot. Men can be sexy. Men can be cute. Women don't own those descriptions. I've seen Itzy's Ryujin described as handsome and no one seemed to think it was derogitory and it didn't feel derogitory at all. She's beautiful, especially in this last comeback. Her styalist is killing me! I honest don't know how I feel about the relm of transgender/gender neutral or any of that. But I know my fellow humans just want to be loved and respected so that's what I try and do. I recognize I have a feminin side and and for years I was scared of it and confused. It took me a long time to sort it out(mostly). I wear feminin clothing sometimes. I think it's silly and counter productive to state what a woman or a man should look like in an iron clad box and pretend thats the only way it is. It's honestly a weird and useless hill to die on. I would personally be thrilled if someone thought I was beautiful, pretty or cute, but i've also known men that would break your nose if you called them pretty. If those idols aren't offended then why should anyone else be?!

I think the second one depends when it comes to fans.
If you just listen to kpop, you're good. It's just music.
But I went through the mental destructiveness. That's the whole reason why I left all kpop-related accounts I had.
The main cause in my experience: kpop fans. I was always worrying on how people looked at me for stanning a certain idol.

We of course know that being a celebrity is destructive, not only in kpop

Would you say me not wanting to go to college would be wasting my time :/ i mean, i want to go somewhere that focuses on music production (i had this dream to be a songwriter/producer even before i found kpop) but I've been told that i wouldn't stand out to anybody and it's not worth the time and I'm not talented enough for it. I don't really have many other interests that could turn into a job, so i didn't see any reason to go to a standard college. My grades have been dropping since i hit 7th grade and i feel like it's more because I'm trying to achieve my dream and try to work hard in school simultaneously and it's causing me to fail at both in the long run. I have noticed that i listen to more music than i used to, which might seem obsessive, but i not only use it to learn about writing styles, techniques and such, i also use what i listen to as a way to cope with anxiety. Whenever i have a panic attack in a place that's not home where somebody is there to help me, like school, i turn on my music and after a while, i start to calm down. I'm 15 so i hope this is just a phase....and i wouldn't consider myself obsessed, but my family and friends would and it's started to take an impact on me, but whenever i try slowing down on the music i listen to, it just speeds back up before i know it.... I've written too much and i kinda lost my place lol

1. I've read somewhere that the original meaning of 'stan' in K-Pop is 'sasaeng', an obsessive love for specific idols/groups. So it's more like stalking a group or idol (in real life or virtually) than just being a normal fan. I try to avoid the word 'stan' too since I read that. I like a K-Pop group or specific idols. That has to be enough 'emotional involvement'.

2. Mainstream music is always capitalism, and not only K-Pop. Is this generally a bad thing? People often try to separate in 'artistic' and 'commercial' reasons for making music. But even the most independent artist needs to fill up a fridge.

The industry works how the fans works. Writer of that opinion: If you have a problem with merchandising, don't buy it. But don't tell others how they should enjoy their favorite K-Pop groups.

3. I don't care about the age of K-Pop fans. I don't care about the age of Metal fans, Jazz fans, Country fans, fans of Classical music.
When I visit a Metal concert, there are older fans, younger fans, even whole families. Why does anyone believe that music is age dependent?

4. I don't get the point. I'm straight, but I have no problem calling another man 'beautiful'. In K-Pop idols are often feminized because they often look
and act more feminine than average Western men. But is this a disadvantage? I would like to ask the writer of that opinion: "If you call only male idols 'handsome' and only female idols 'beautiful', how would you call a transexual idol? In a less transparent music scene you wouldn't even know about the gender of every group member. Because strictly speaking it's none of your business."

don't hate me, but the first one kinda makes sense? I didn't know the origin of stan was an Eminem song until I Urban Dictionaried it a few years back for funsies (I knew the song, just not the meaning), but I still use it. But now thart I've seen this post (the Tumblr one, not this one), I'm thinking of replacing stan with fan from now on...

Not going to college is not a waste of your time. Some people just don't do well in the structured education setting and that's perfectly ok. If there's one thing that history teaches over and over again is that there's a million roads to success and a million different definitions to success. I went to college for no other reason than I love to learn and I found some things that fascinate me. I also do much better in a classroom setting.

I don't really have many other interests that could turn into a job, so i didn't see any reason to go to a standard college. My grades have been dropping since i hit 7th grade and i feel like it's more because I'm trying to achieve my dream and try to work hard in school simultaneously and it's causing me to fail at both in the long run.

I admire you standing up for what you love and want to do. I know an engineer that became an engineer for no other reason than his mother expected him to be one. He hates his job. His dream is to open up a Bahn Mi shop. Eventually satisfying mom, dad and everyone else won't sustain you any more. Satisfying mom, dad and others will only make for a miserable life for everyone. Your happiness matters! You matter! Life does not flourish on the happiness of others.

Music is what keeps me going so I totally get it. I risk my well paying job every day when I put my ear buds in because honestly, I'd lose my mind with out that keeping me going. A k-pop song is what brought me back from the edge of ending it. Everyone has the right to a life full happiness and that includes you! Happiness is everyone's right. You do not have to earn it, you do not ask for permission to be happy. Happiness is also a decision. Sometimes we have to decide to be happy no matter how much something sucks or how miserable our circumstances are.

I'm 15 so i hope this is just a phase....and i wouldn't consider myself obsessed, but my family and friends would and it's started to take an impact on me, but whenever i try slowing down on the music i listen to, it just speeds back up before i know it.... I've written too much and i kinda lost my place lol

You made a very important point. Your 15, remember that, enjoy that. It's totally ok to be obsessed with k-pop as long as it's not hurting your life. 1. I have read somewhere about this one a while ago, and while I still use it only to talk about the groups that I’m a big fan of (I don’t mean as in using ‘Stan’ to mean as “stalker” ofc) I sometimes wonder whether I should stop using this word or not and just replace it with being a ‘big fan’ of that group/artist instead because a lot of us still use the ‘stan’ word even though we obviously don’t mean it by the literal definition of it’s origin.

2. I mean selling merchandise is the whole point of the music industry anyway. But at the same time, you can still be a fan without having to purchase and own any of the merch and/or physical albums, etc. that your fav artist has released. No one should ever feel guilty about not buying and owning a physical item of their faves. Just only listening to their music is enough for you to be their fan and is more important than owning a merch or an album of theirs.

the last one, I disagree - I call male idols “pretty”, “gorgeous”, “beautiful” all the time & I‘m still sticking to that. There’s nothing wrong with using these terms that are seen as the opposite to what we should describe the opposite gender with. Though with the ‘infantized’ part, I only use the words cute/adorable to describe an idol that is a lot younger than me, but would never use it for the ones that are the same age as me nor older than me.
