Viking didn’t refer to a cultural group until the 1800s (1 Viewer)

The word viking has a long, complicated, uncertain, and controversial etymology. However, it is known that prior to Romanic literature from the 1800s, Viking only referred to people of a specific occupation (raiding, sailing) or to the act of participating in such activities. 19th century romantic literature about Vikings was the point where the word began to encompass a cultural group as well. English speakers before that often referred to the group of peoples as the Danes, which is reflected in what the area in Great Britain where Vikings settled was referred to (the Danelaw).

To add the word viking was initially applied to the act itself (as in: "to go viking") and the word is believed to stem from the word "Vik" which is still used here in Sweden today (probably in Denmark and Norway too?) meaning bay or inlet, as vikings would raid the coasts.

Another interesting tidbit is that the word viking is typically used as a catch-all term for our old (medieval) ancestors by most nordic countries despite being technically untrue, this detail is really only nitpicked by english speakers.
