Talent or personality.
I don't find my biases the prettiest in their respective groups.

to each their own, but i personally care about the music, the performances, skills and so on the most. i really couldn't care less about how the idols look, i mean i often compliment idols' appearance regardless if i like their group or not but at the end of the day, no matter how attractive the group members are, i'm not going to get into them if their music is not good enough for me.

for me personally, I do definitely get drawn in because of visuals, but there needs to be some sort of talent for me to stay. for example, jisoo is my ultimate bias, I originally picked her as my ultimate bias because I was drawn in by her visuals, but I stayed because I really enjoyed her voice and her passion when it comes to performing. if someone's only trait is being pretty then there's no reason for me to stay.

The thing with kpop is for me that everyone looks relatively good. It's not like there is truly ugly idols around (even if everyone is not my type). Ofc visuality of kpop attracts me, but it's not visuals themselves- who I by my own standard find mostly plain It's the mvs, outfits, styling.. And what comes to idols look, I have always thought the "ugly" groups have better looks ^^;

What comes to kpop visuals I'd like to see more individuality and not just one type that is considered pretty or handsome.

Anyway on topic lol, it depends on me from group to group. I can't deny that visuals pull me in but I won't get into the group if I don't find the music to my tastes. In that case I'll just remain aware of the group and the pretty members without getting into them any more.

Once I find music that I like, I try watching more stuff from the group like live stages, varieties etc. and then my bias usually ends up being the one with the personality that appeals to me the most. They don't necessarily have to be the prettiest in the group.

Like in Oh My Girl, I think Yooa is the most beautiful member, but my bias is Hyojung lol.

I think 3 factors are important when it comes to getting a group popular

1) Talent, of course, is important. Groups often earn respect or fame for their talent too (e.g. BTOB and Suju-KRY are known being vocally strong groups and often earn respect because of it).
2) Opportunity. Basically releasing the right song and the right concept at the right time. Every popular group got attention because of their "it" song.
3) Visuals. I lost count how many times people asked "who is that boy?" when they see Taeyong. Visuals draw attention and new people. Especially in the recent years visuals have become more important

Visuals are okay - a nice plus, talent matters the most to me and if I relate to the idol that's great as well.. but mostly I just care about the talent/music part because I usually don't follow idols closely enough to know their personality too well anway..

Well said! Yeah I get into groups usually for a visual element but i leave pretty quickly if the music isn't up to par.
I think the way I worded my post was confusing, but i was bascially arguing that most international fans don't stan based on korean visual standards but their own. so like with red velvet, irene is objectively the prettiest but my bias is yeri because of my personal preference for her visuals/personality.

True, there are so many pretty people in Kpop lol, so although someone might catch my eye, it's just not worth the time and investment required to get into their group if there's not atleast some music appealing to me.
But the visuals do grab your attention the fastest, and I think a lot of fans do the same, although like you said, it's subconscious a lot of times. A pretty thumbnail is reason enough for most people to click on a new video, which you might have otherwise passed up on. Same when agencies release pics/teasers before the actual song.

So yeah, atleast for the introduction to a new group, visuals are definitely important. The music and personalities eventually become more important once you've decided to stick with a group and discover new stuff and maybe find a bias.

Agreed about international fans possibly finding a member other than the one meeting Korean standards the prettiest. Even with Twice, so many people prefer other girls to Tzuyu visually, same with SNSD where a lot of Sones found non-Yoona members the most attractive lol.

Lol I've seen you with only Jennie aesthetics for as long as I remember so I was shook
I'm only a casual fan of Blackpink and my bias used to be Jisoo for the longest time, but starting sometime early 2019, Jennie's Instagram wrecked me big time and eventually I moved over to the Jennie camp
This was just before Coachella too, so once Coachella happened I knew it had to be Jennie

yeah it's smart to avoid becoming a stan. it's draining and bad for both your mental/physical health. are your biases mostly main vocals/dancers/rappers then?
