Everyone meet the black bear, Winnie. Named after the Canadian city Winnipeg, she was a mascot for the Royal Canadian Army Veterinary Corps during WW1. She traveled to London, at which point her group went to France without her. She stayed at the London Zoo. As a child, Christopher Robin saw her at the zoo on multiple occasions and named his bear after her. His father wrote stories about Christopher Robin and his stuffed animals, who form the basis for the stories about Winnie the Pooh.

That is interesting! I know that the books were written about a boy playing with his stuffed animals, but I didn't know Winnie was based on a real bear.
