Once upon a time, ancestors of whales evolved to walk on land. They then returned to the sea. Over time, they lost many adaptations that they gained to live on land. However, some modern whale species still have some bones that are thought to previously be their hips and back legs.

They weren’t anywhere close to that size when they lived on land. They evolved become so big when they became fully aquatic again
