So I have an unpopular opinion. I love Fancy by TWICE, but it frustrates me to no end. Probably because of its heavy flirtations with a darker storyline, yet none of them come to fruition — and the super fascinating sci-fi motifs just wind up being purely decorative. I wish they'd done a lot more with the excellent aesthetics they had at disposal, but maybe discussing the song/MV will alleviate this problem for me.
I'd noted somewhere else that this song and MV are a throwback to early 2000s pop. (I know people are obsessed with 80s nostalgia right now, but Fancy doesn't evoke that for me at all. The constant green-screen, everything... it's so early 2000s! Mina's scene in front of the city view even reminds me of Britney Spears' Toxic.)
But it's just so kitschy in a specific way that I couldn't put my finger on. Then I realized Europop could be a specific inspiration for Fancy? Could be why they use "I fancy you," which is so distinctly British, rather than the usual Americanisms.
Thoughts?
