with their song lyrics?

--

Starting this off with 2NE1.

They mostly do break-up songs, either the lyrics are about getting out of abusive or bad relationship (I Don't Care, Go Away, Hate You) or wistful songs about lost love (It Hurts, Happy, Missing You)- intrestingly Good to you is kinda mix of both. And they have quite many songs about self-worth as well/or about bragging if you want to see it that way (I am the best, Crush, Can't Nobody)- or lack of it (Ugly).

I quite like their lyrics in general, they aren't straight up female empowerment I guess, but they are kinda in that way in terms of getting away from bad relationships and finding your self-worth in those situations and in general.

I would be interested hearing about other groups too, since I love good lyrics and meanings in songs, but quite seldom take time to actually look at kpop lyrics (usually they are pretty worthless so.. ^^;), so I might be quite out of loop with many groups.

f(x) jumps around a lot tbh
4 Walls is about how love is like 4 walls— you can either make it your home or prison
Then you have a lot of typical SM first love type of thing too lmao
And then Diamond is about self love basically
Ending Page is about a break up and the unknown future
Airplane is about the risks of love — similar to boarding an airplane

That’s all I can remember atm lmao

Yea that's what I have noticed as well, their titles are often quite poppy and bit meaningless for me, but then you have quite great lyrics like Diamond or 4walls. But I guess for them their lyrics are kinda: they take concept and put it in the title then lyrics are crafted around that concept so that they usually talk about love in some way regardless. Overall i think they are quite playful the lyrics, they are kinda literal like Dracula is about vampires, but they circle around the themes like Toy or Airplane. Idk if that made sense xd

First of all, I'll start with 2NE1 because you mentioned them and I remembered how powerful Ugly was. I used it as an example for my final college thesis about how the Korean society chas that standard beauty and we all know 2NE1 was never called a beautiful group. Except Dara. But the song itself is so powerful with the lyrics 'I think I'm ugly, and nobody wants to love me'. The MV as well... they're wearing masks at the beginning but they are dancing in the end.

Second, when I've read about lyrics with a meaning, I was instantly thinking about BTS. They were always knew for their lyrics for the new generation. Of course they have different types of lyrics as well. For example the Love yourself era bringed a very powerful problem in 21st century society. Most young people have trust issues and don't love themselves. Probably for this we can talk about Epiphany. Epiphany is the last intro for the Love Yourself era. Euphoria and Singularity are about love in general, then Singularity about a lost love, and in the end Epiphany about how important is to love yourself first. Even Idol (such a party song) is kind of a lesson for other artists that they shoudn't forget themselves.
Or let's go to their older songs. Spring day is about friendship. No more dream and the intro for O!RUL8,2? is about finding a your dream and your path, avoiding your weakness. Move is about their trainee days. And a lot of their songs teach you to continue your path even when you feel you can't, like Never mind or So what?. They also have strong songs, little diss, like Not today or Mic drop.

I can talk a lot about the meaning behind their songs.

BAP has a really wide range of topics, everything from mental health, love, the government, meaningless pop songs, society and societal pressures, ect. For the most part a of of their older songs tended to be about the government specifically, as far as title tracks, but now they've branched out more, although they still have a lot of more recent songs about stuff like that (Ribbon in the Sky).

I love UGLY too. I have heard some say it's bad message or anti feminist, but I don't think it's supposed to be taken literally like that. t's talking about negative feelings that people might have about themselves- and that the girls have likely experienced due to public and even their fcking boss calling them ugly (shame on YG). I think it's great to voice these feelings cause they exist and then like shown in the mv move on from them. Ugly is always one of my fav 2NE1 song : )

BTS really has those teenager rebellion songs, lot of their songs have lyrics like that and I think the initative comes from themselves like RM usually has similar stuff in his solo songs what I have gathered. And I don't mean teenager rebellion as bad or cringy thing, it is about problems that teenagers and now young adults too face as well as commentary on society that creates these problems.

Yup, they have quite drastic genre changes too that have always thrown me out of loop ^^; I mostly like their fuck goverment and society stuff they did at start (and couple pop-rock sounds about mental health/self-love) : )
