I guess so too, some ppl make it here as well, but it's more traditional for u guys?
I think it’s especially common for New Years. Christmas I’m not sure, it’s not a particularly big holiday in Russia anyways in comparison so I don’t know any Russian traditions for Christmas.

meringues/merengues/however you spell it. My mom makes the best I've ever tasted! It's a little airy cake thing with ice cream/whipped cream (we used ice cream this year bc we discovered last minute that we didn't have any whipped) and strawberries in it.

It’s orthodox for sure, and probably getting more religious, but the more secular parts of Christmas (Christmas trees, presents, family, ect) are more associated with New Years than Christmas. Christmas is really exclusively religious in Russia. It’s a remnant of the USSR, the USSR heavily discouraged religion and basically switched New Years to being the huge midwinter festival to join in merriment and be with family and such. And New Years is still the big holiday during the holiday season for Russians. I think New Years coming first plays a role too when it comes to scope. Many people celebrate both, but people generally have more energy for the first events in cases like these, and in this case secular New Years is before Orthodox Christmas.

uh, no...? it's French in origin. it's made with whipped egg whites, sugar, and cream, and then you put ice cream and strawberries on top

Pavlova is a form of meringue. Its texture is a bit different from standard French merengue for some parts, but its ingredients are basically the same and it has a similar taste and texture mostly. It’s also often topped with fruit and cream :sanapray:

The biggest difference is just that standard meringue is usually fully crispy, while pavlova has a crispy outside and a chewier inside. The other differences aren’t very noticeable, and many may not even notice the difference. I’ve had both and didn’t even know the difference at first without researching

Also what’s interesting is that aside from the fact that pavlova is a type of meringue, pavlova is more often topped with fruit and cream than the standard French meringue is. French meringue is more delicate than pavlova, so often times it’s not topped with fruit because it’ll fall apart due to the juice and weight. So if you topped it with fruit and ice cream, you may have actually had pavlova rather than French meringue :sanapray:
