Never read an Ellen Hopkins book but I remember seeing them in the library. They were too thick for me. I think some of my older siblings were into those books.

Religious texts being banned is very unsurprising to me. Plenty of places in the past (and now) have no sense of freedom of religion, so if a text can convince others to convert to a new religion it must be terrible and ban worthy. Especially if you're enemies with them. Jehovah's witnesses even did things like sneak their texts into East Germany inside laundry detergent containers and whatnot too, within the past 70 years or so so fairly recently.
