What does it mean to you if you don’t like something? (3 Viewers)

Just an interesting thing I was curious about. If someone says they “don’t like” something, do you automatically assume they dislike it? Or do you think they could dislike it, but also they could be neutral too? Or even they could love it (though I feel like that’s only said with that clarification, I’m not sure if people say they don’t like it and don’t immediately follow it up with “I love it!”)

If someone says they don't like something, my mind won't think they're neutral.
It goes straight to they don't like it.

why say you dislike something if you dont have negative opinion about the thing? That is just confusing and makes no sense to me
Ofcourse if the situation is something like that person is in a group where they know someone doesnt like something so they also say they dont like it to gain friendship exp. I would understand but its still dumb

The difference here is that they didn’t say dislike, which inherently means have a negative view. That just say “don’t like”, which isn’t technically the same as dislike and could mean neutral because someone who’s neutral doesn’t like whether it is, they’re just neutral.

But that said I think a lot of people interpret “don’t like” as the same as dislike, which I generally do too. But I know of people who interpret don’t like as very literally meaning anything except like, whether it’s hate, dislike, neutral, ect. And I see where they’re coming from since like and dislike are not the only two ways you can feel about something. I would never claim that someone who’s neutral fits in either of the two categories, for example. And from that perspective, viewing don’t like as dislike would probably feel like considering everyone who’s hair isn’t black a brunette because the vast majority of people are one of the two.

I'm practicing taking people at their word, so if they say "I don't like it," I assume they mean they dislike it.

I get it but i dont get it. What i dont understand is why must they use i dont like instead of likes of words that would show their indifference more clearly like im indifferent, i dont know, i dont care, i dont think about that etc. This might be a thing that goes beyond my understanding of english
