Ironically, McDonalds has really high quality standards for their fries... Potatoes are graded in 10 quality standards. McDonalds will only use the top 5 of the highest. But I agree, they are not the best by far.

5 guys has good fries but the quality of potatoes they use is really poor. They use really high quality Oil and good seasoning. Their potatoes are not processed which makes them very vulnerable to seasonal issues. Potatoes in winter have a low sugar content and what sugar they has migrated to the edges of the potatoes which creates sugar tips. That's when the tips of the fries oxidize quickly after cooking and can get mushy.

Yes, it does. I've had theirs but they always over-salt it in my local one. So, I felt like I was just eating salt.
I could have asked not to do that the second time around, but never bothered to do so.
