I do have a follow up question: should it be accessible to people with physical ailments or mental ailments too?

I know someone who said they considered putting their very sick cat to sleep but then considered that humans don’t get that option as often. To them it solidified why they shouldn’t do it even though I thought it was weird reasoning and that it seemed kinder for the pets (when they’re actually needing it).

I'm a dentist, not an MD. That being said, a stage 5 cancer or any terminal physical condition causing severe pain and a complete loss of autonomy are very much valid reasons. Criterias differ from one state to another (where legalized) but they're all pretty near the marker. I don't know 'bout Canada tho (if you're asking me 'bout that country). You'd prolly know more than I do.

I was more curious about criteria in other parts of the world so you answered my question perfectly. In Canada medically assisted death is only an option for those with severe physical ailments, not mental.

Of course it should be but only for extreme cases where there is no treatment that will allievate symptoms or fix the issues like there was a medical based series that did an episode related to the topic and the case given was someone with an illness that would leave them unable to function their body at all and the doctor letting them leave the hospital knowing they were going to harm themselves because of the fate they'd have and in that scenario it seems particularly cruel to just force someone to go on until something gives in their own body.
