f(x) didn't even get their fandom name until years after SM's newer groups all did. Like 7 years after they debuted. They were treated like SM's ugly stepchild.

no. they debuted as 12, the 13th member was added during their first comeback (she was an i.o.i member and hence didn't debut with them), and the c-line were packed off by their agency yuehua to china in 2018 to promote there. they ended up becoming more successful than the korean members, so they stayed there, while ot10 wjsn continued promoting in korea under starship. during contract renewal time, starship officially stated that their partnership with yuehua ended, so wjsn is (formally) 10 now.
