What’s tipping culture like where you are from? (1 Viewer)

Ofc everyone knows you tip at restaurants (in the US), but other places here expect tips too, such as bellhops, sometimes hotel staff, taxi drivers, hairdressers, and tattoo parlors. When it comes to restaurants sometimes the tip is also included by default, I once ate at a restaurant that included an automatic 30% tip (written in small print too, which annoyed my dad because it can be easily overlooked, meaning some customers who don’t pay too much attention to why the price is the way it is may add an extra 20% tip or something).

thank god it's not a thing anywhere near me, i would be mad if i had to pay more than the cost of what i bought i like eating out but i rarely give tips, after all it's the employer who should pay them a liveable wage

Almost everywhere asks for tips except for grocery stores And you gotta tip at least 15%

I saw someone who have a story about some Europeans that they waited for (at a place in the US), and after the meal those people said “we won’t tip you because you did a great job but we’re against tipping because it’s unfair for the employer to pay a pathetic minimum wage” and left without tipping. And yeah, they’re not wrong it’s unfair, but they just made it more unfair by not giving her even a tip. Now she waited for hours on them and earned below minimum wage in total because clearly the employer won’t change her wage because they refused to tip. I almost wonder if they really just didn’t want to spend more money because how could someone say that and not see that they’re just being douches?

I was just reminded of that from your comment, I don’t think you’d do something like that if you were eating an American restaurant. It’s just so wtf that they did that and thought they were helping someone

In Belgium, we don't tip.
Sometimes we leave our change as a "tip" (e.g. you get 32 cents back, we'll just leave it).

Only place where ive heard people are tippkng is on foodora or wolt for the delivery person i wouldnt know how to tip if i went somewhere where its normal

I live in the US so you all know it's TERRIBLE because it's out of control!!!!!!!! Just do a random "American Tipping Culture" search using your search engines.

It’s usually fairly consistent between paces that offer the same services (like tipping at a restaurant tends to be 20% as a default most places) but keeping track of all places that you should tip and their expected is a lot. Like I looked at bellhops and for hotel rooms it’s apparently expected to be $1 per bag, but $2 if it’s a heavy bag, and if they also help show you how to turn on the light switch or other basic stuff like that its $5??? Like how is someone suppose to keep track of all that for all services?
