When did kpop become a hobby for adults? (1 Viewer)

It's a fact that kpop from the very beginning has been strictly aimed at teenage girls only. They are the ones that pretty much invented fandom culture going as far back as Elvis and The Beatles and probably even further back then that.

If you want to make some serious money in the music industry then you create boy groups that will create passionate fandoms of girls who will do anything for their oppas. Then you create girl groups for the same girls to look up to and admire like they are sisters or bffs.

So when and how did we get to the point of adults being just as into these groups as the kids? Sure the adults are still outnumbered big time by the teens but it's closer in kpop than it ever has or will be with Western pop groups and adults.

Did this start in 1st gen? I'm not positive but it doesn't seem like it was. 2nd gen? This is probably the era where adult men really began getting into the fandom of girl groups but I wish I had some real stats.

Can anyone provide any insight on when and why so many adult men and women love kpop and get obsessed with their favorite groups?

I'm sure there were some but no where near what it is in kpop. Grown adults connect with kpop while grown adults despise American pop.

Just because it's aimed at teens doesnt mean that adults make up a small percentage of the population interested in kpop. Why would Shinee have a song about older women way back in second gen if few adults listened to kpop?

The comments are tame compared to other forums were older male fans are treated as criminals.

Kpop was created by old men, so it makes sense it's natural for those type of fans to "get" the genre pretty well.

I should have just asked in the original post did adults get on the kpop bandwagon in 1st gen or 2nd gen?

Look at the biggest kpop groups from first to most recent gen, a lot of their fans are in their 20's to 40's. They aren't a minority either. Even nugus have older fans. It's a music genre. Maybe a few concepts could cater to a younger audience but to put everyone in the same basket, especially in 2022, is reaching far.

The main and maybe only reason idol groups disband around their 30's is because of ageism and your thread is one of those.

There's no age to enjoy any music genre. You're literally an older man listening to kpop, what was the point of this thread other than being a troll. lol

Why does it matter if adults are into kpop? As long as they aren’t hurting anyone its fine. As an adult who likes kpop (despite being decades younger than you), I enjoy it for how impressive it is. Just because it can be seen as targeted at one population doesn’t mean they’re the only population. Teens and kids could also gravitate towards things aimed at adults.

There's always been adult fans, but they seem to have been more prominent during 2nd gen because of more public friendly songs and mature concept groups

Or maybe because kpop is aimed at teenagers and they aren't gonna support a groups of 35 year olds. They are gonna support the new groups that are their age.

This isn't ageism. Its proof its aimed at teens. Want more proof? Why don't kpop debut groups who are in their 40s?
