Now I write fanfiction myself so I am biased.

However, recently on Tumblr, I've been having random pictures pop up on my dash where EXO-L's edited some of the footage from their most recent show to make it look as though Chanyeol had either Kyungsoo or Baekhyun in his bed after a night of love making-that was the intention of the photos by the way. The captions coupled with them pointed to that being the main point of the edited photos.

It wasn't just like one image I saw; it was several I know this isn't anything new? But this was my first time being exposed to it and despite writing smut it made me INCREDIBLY uncomfortable.

So my question is do you find photos that are realistically edited to tell a story like the one I mentioned above worse than smutty fanfiction?

Defend your answer-also please be respectful. Don't attack authors or content creators-this stuff made me uncomfortable but attacking people is cruel and I won't really tolerate it here.

tbh, realistically edited pics are dangerous for an idol.
I remember when Kai x Jennie just came out, people started sharing an edited Rosé x Chanyeol pic. People believed it was real.
I don't think that editors are standing still with the possible consequences of their work.
Kpop is a world where idols get hate and blows in their careers when dating, so imo I think they should clearly mention in the pic that it's a fanart.

Forgot to answer myself, but I believe the realistic photos are worse. These are images that could easily be taken up by places like Dispatch or gossip mongering websites as a means to expose a gay idol. Though homophobia isn't right, I think these images could essentially wind up causing issues and if an idol came upon it or someone else they might feel uncomfortable knowing something they did was taken out of context and edited to be something completely different.

Someone who doesn't know the idol may run off with untrue rumors or rumors that cannot be confirmed, or rumors that could ruin an idol.

The idol themselves would feel violated-however with fanfiction it's clear that it is FICTIONAL.

Pics, hands down. Some of those edits, if you don't know what you're looking for, could easily be mistaken for real and cause serious problems. It's 1000x easier to take an edited photo and use it to create a false narrative that could result in severe consequences than it is a fanfic, because most people won't take words at face value without some proof.

I mean fanfiction is not really harmful imo. It's writing and the rest is up to imagination. Nobody gets hurt in this process.

They're called deepfakes and celebrities are honestly terrified of them. Basically people use A.I. to swap faces, celebs to porn actors, etc. They can even fool some cybersecurity.

Someone did it with Obama. Just to show people how realistic it is-he wasn't in a porn or anything but someone was able to impersonate him. They also used a robot app that tries to replicates voices and it did it pretty naturally...it's creepy.

ahh I watched something on it, and they put Selena's Gomez face over a girl who is ig a porn actress or smth tht is similar to her. Also remember there is a site that can take your voice and it can sound like you! So celebrities should be scared of that too tbh.

I agree with others here. Even though I'm not personally a fan of fanfiction, I don't see anything wrong with writing smut. It is very clearly fiction and it's your choice to read it or not, compared to like if a picture pops up on tumblr, once you've seen the pic in a second, you've seen it. And also of course what people have mentioned, it can possibly be harmful to the idols themselves.

I don't approve of smut fanfic, but photo edits can be really dangerous as they can really jeopardize someone's career if done right. Fanfic is obviously fanfic, so no danger there.
