well i know of cases of people being made to marry inanimate objects in my country due to some astrological logic (not that i personally believe in astrology). basically if you were born under the influence of the planet mars and you marry someone who wasn't, you'd cause your spouse's early death. so to prevent that you'd be married off to an inanimate object (or an animal for that matter) before marrying the human of your choice so that this bad luck is transferred onto it and not your human spouse.
