i think twice should be higher, considering they’re the reason kpop is so famous in japan rn and kpop groups have jlines

ps: boa, tvxq and to some extent kara did pave the way in japan but after them it was twice who single handedly took it to new highs

I know, but they still built upon the success that BoA, KARA, TVXQ, etc. did and if I'm being completely honest as they have a Japanese line I think it makes them a lot more appealing to the broader Japanese market than a lineup consisting of only non-Japanese people. Everyone on that list is on equal footing in my opinion, but are ahead of each other for different reasons. Like it or not, Twice wouldn't have a Japanese line to appeal to the Japanese market if it wouldn't have been for artists like TVXQ, BoA, and KARA that showed that a non-Japanese artist could become mainstream in Japan. Don't take that as a bash against Twice because I love them, but that is the reason why I ranked them how I did.

They're actually 2nd Gen ;) 1st Gen is pre 2002. But yeah, I totally agree with you! It's not exactly easy to single-handedly pick just one! And they all contributed in some form or another.

Psy is first gen; he debuted in 2001 despite his late Western breakthrough.

That said, no one's paved the way; every time someone tries, it devolves into a dirt road with more and harder clods.

PSY fact ✔︎ I was referring to Big Bang tho! hehe Yes, i think that in the end, they all contributed to the advancement of the Kpop culture in some form or another.

I don't think that there's one particular K-Pop artist who paved the way. In my opinion, the path paved is more of a combined effort from multiple K-Pop artists who were able to find ways to expand the K-Pop genre to become the global phenomenon it is now.

But I will admit one thing and that is Lee-Sooman being the one who started the K-pop path by introducing the K-Pop trainee system in the 1990s.

I brought this up because every path has a starting point. I don't know how K-Pop would've been if the idol training system was never introduced because all companies incorporate this system before debuting idols (groups and soloists).

Several different artsists are responsible. I bolded the groups that I think are most responsible in their generation for the growth of K-Pop.

1st Gen - TVXQ, Baby Vox, hot, god, Super Junior, Fin.KL, BoA, SES, Big Bang
2nd Gen - Wonder Girls, SNSD, KARA, T-Ara, EXO, Beast, SHINee
3rd Gen - Twice, BTS, Blackpink, Seventeen, NCT, GOT7, GFriend, Mamamoo
4th Gen - Ateez, aespa, (G)-Idle, Enhyphen, TXT, Itzy, Stray Kids, IVE, New Jeans

I didn't bold any in 4th gen because it's too soon to tell although IVE, New Jeans, TXT, & Stray Kids would be the most responsible imo at the moment.

Overall out of the ones that I've listed here's my Top 10 ranking of who I think is most responsible, but none of them account for more than 5% of the broader Korean wave. In my opinion, the broader Korean wave is built off successive generations with each one contributing more than the last, but without the initial 1st gen the Korean wave would've never existed.

Bigbang debuted in 2006 which is officially categorized as 2nd gen. But you did say it's your definition so it's obv always left to interpretation.
