Why don’t we appreciate nature as a gift? (1 Viewer)

I’ve been reading a book for one of my classes and it has an interesting concept: gifts come from the earth. Specifically it referenced strawberries, they are earths gift to us, the heart berry. It got me thinking about how we live in such a materialistic world. Why don’t we appreciate nature as a gift? As a society, humans have rapidly developed land without care for it.​

To be fair some cultures do. But for a lot of people it really probably just comes down to that we take it for granted. Also for people who don’t have a religion that treats earth or nature as a sentient thing, it may be hard to pair up gift giving with a non sentient thing like the earth.

Oh yeah definitely, referring back to the book I am reading, it is rooted in Indigenous history and culture. I meant more from a Western point of view, but should have definitely clarified that.
