Why do you think it has?

I am doing a project in my social change class and I also did a speech today where I had to go
over the statistics of depression and anxiety, even some of the suicide rates which have very sadly
increased a lot even between 2005-2019. But there's a lot of talk about why it's happening and it
seems kids and parents kind of go head to head about this a lot, so what's your opinion?

Unfortunately that's not a big part of it anymore. Depression and anxiety weren't seen that often within the elder generations. However the more years that have passed and the more generations we pass it just gets worse.

Human selfishness and standards have raised exponentially. I blame parents and environments for this, because instead of giving children motivation and reasons to live happily, they are forcing their agenda down their kids throats. Why don't you get good grades? You must not be my child! My child should be the hardest working and MORE! Listen parents... if you want something to brag about, you should go buy a Rolex or an expensive car - not have a child. Lower your standards and accept them, help them grow, teach them the difference between right and wrong, and learn to love them for who they are, not your ideal image of a child. Kids are not deserving of the pressure put upon them.

I think people are turning to suicide because it is so glorified in our society nowadays. Additionally, isn't it rather easy to kill yourself? Guns aren't exactly the hardest thing to acquire anymore, and even then there are plenty of other options for people to choose.

People in this day and age are becoming rather desensitized to suicide and death and for this, I blame the education system. You cannot teach death to a person who has not experienced it themselves. Sure, we all are aware of the many wars or tragedies as we have been taught, but can we fully understand the magnitude of what it means to lose a life? World War 2? The Holocaust? Can we truly understand how horrific death is by learning numbers of how many have died and nothing more about the individual victims themselves? I don't believe so.

I'm sorry if the above statement seems misguided. I only know what I myself have experienced and how I have been raised, and that is why I have the above opinions.

Suicide is an escape. The world is awful, and suicide is freedom. Freedom from the pressure of my family, who berate me for the low spots in my life, because I didn't work hard enough or because I had it coming. It's like they sat on the sidelines and watched as I fell into a pool of sharks and watched while I was eaten alive. That's why suicide to me is a release. I don't know how to answer questions such as "will the afterlife be painful?", and I do not care. Because at this moment in time, what's most important to me is the current suffering. If suicide brings about the end of my suffering, then I will gratefully pull the trigger to end my life.

Well apparently looking at screens doesn’t help
So um
That may be part of it.
Also a greater sense of cynicism and dread in mass media.
Also it has become somewhat popular to self diagnose and then perpetuate symptoms subconsciously
As well as for doctors to diagnose more liberally

Something to keep in mind is that you mentioned to end your current suffering.

I have went through ... rather difficult parts of my life that I rather not go into depth about where I experienced these same thoughts. I know you probably will take this as a grain of salt, but I can promise at some point it does get better. That better will come when you are able to seperate yourself from your parents, all of the people who have done you harm either physically or mentally. I have come to a peaceful state after detaching myself from everything that had pulled me down and I no longer have thoughts like that.

Sometimes it's worth the wait ... happiness is a very fragile thing that many take for granted.

Because we're all deeply unhappy.

Because people can't afford basic necessities. You work all day, just to hardly make enough to keep a roof over your head.
People can't afford health care.
Corporations run everything, brainwashing people that if they don't have this, your life is worth shit. If you don't look like this, you're worthless.
Social media- not much to explain there.

People have stopped communicating with each and have turned to technology. Humans need to socialize with each other, it's how we''re built.

Also this gross online culture of being self deprecating 24/7 about your mental illness and not getting the help you need.

I admire your courage and I wish I had some of that. The truth is, I don't have a lot of money, but I have enough to be happy. This means that sometimes I spent 3x my paycheck in two days on something that will only make me happy for a short period of time. But... I don't regret buying any of these things. I love these things, and my parents just can't seem to agree.

They want me to stop spending money and have enough to pay for college. I pay for everything (tuition + books) myself because my parents have no money to help out. Although, the truth is that my step dad makes a lot of money. His money goes to our bills and paying child support for his youngest son, while the rest goes to Christmas presents or things to make my mom happy, like buying new furniture or getting a brand new TV. I wonder often times why they never offer to help me out. I thought parents were supposed to want to give their kids the best chance possible and do anything to help them succeed, but it seems like all my parents care about is their own happiness.

They don't know that, this job I've had for three months now, is probably not one I'll be at long. Nor do they know that I've already been written up twice and have such severe anxiety going to work everyday that I cry the entire car-ride over and sometimes the car-ride home. Why do I still have this job? Because it keeps them silent, and they cannot hound me for staying in my room all the time when I am making some money on the side. And so, when I slept for 15 hours one day, I didn't have the heart to explain to my parents that my depression and fear of the world is at an all time high right now because 1. I hate myself, 2. I hate the world, 3. I hate my job, and 4. I hate my eating disorder that has taken over my life and haunts me every single day.

I thought that 'better' had come, but it turns out that was wrong. I don't know how to find happiness anymore, no matter how much money I spend. I hope that Buddhism will teach me the way to be happy and give up on my human selfishness. Why is happiness so hard to achieve?

From what I've seen, it's mostly just people seeking attention even to drastic extent.. Every so often I come across somebody on the internet who weaponizes anxiety/depression to project their anger onto others. These people think they're immune to any type of repercussion because the internet can be an escape from reality AND everything is digital these days. That compounded with the fact that social media can be one's worst nightmare from the rampant toxicity which leads to egos getting hurt/bottled feelings or perhaps even repulsive behaviors. Sorry if I didn't answer the question properly. xD

I feel like there's a lot of reasons why it's increased, but I'll just provide a few.

- There's a of pressure being put onto people. A lot of us are expected to reach these standards that are incredibly hard to achieve. The pressure can stem up school, work, self-esteem, bullying, family expectations, etc. With having such an immense amount of pressure being put onto, it can stress you out, give you panic attacks, and cause bouts of depression if you don't reach the said standard.

- Trauma. Experiencing any sort of trauma, especially during childhood, can obviously give you a lot of anxiety and depression. These traumatic experiences even shape who we are. Whenever a traumatic memory is triggered it can cause you a lot of stress and panic.

I'm an anxiety sufferer myself btw.
