I never understood the need for “fans” to tell idols to “speak English” or ask them “why their English is so good”. It is crazy to think that “fans” can’t fathom that an idol can (or cannot) speak English. It is not an obligation to know a specific language and shouldn’t be shocked if they do know a specific language. ​

Bonus points if the idol is from a country that primarily speaks English i was thinking of the Johnny and Eric Nam clips from here earlier today. But I do feel like that applies more to interviewers than fans

Interviewers are just as bad for this. I remember it happening to Namjoon of BTS frequently too.

Definitely agree. I think in some cases fans genuinely are surprised with some idols speaking English, but overall it shouldn't be one all the time

From an American point of view it's because American's are lazy and self centered. American's have a hard time grasping that the world doesn't evolve around our simi-english speaking country. In high school I took 4 years of German and have honestly been asked "why" many times. "Because that's not useful." You should learn Spanish so you can make more money. When I studied Japanese in college it was pretty much the same thing but with the excuse of "anime and manga". I honestly think the only reason Spanish is big is because they speak it just across the border so a lot of immigrants speak it. Any other language taught is just so we don't seem racist. But Trump pretty much ruined any illusions about racism in the US. I actually hate being American now.

I personally don't see a huge problem with it, when I moved abroad many people told me how good I speak their language or asked me how I learned the language so fast. But I saw it as a compliment.

I have to say when I meet someone from another country, I also don't assume immediately assume that they speak my language and then I'm positively surprised when they do.
