In today's day and age, a lot more SA happens. Not that it hasn't existed for centuries but it's more common.
That also sadly came with the phenomenon of victim blaming.
A common phrase I hear as a women's rights advocate is "Why can't you report the incident to loved ones or the police?"
To answer question one, they don't usually believe you.
To answer question two, they don't usually believe you.
But I'll tell you something.
Junko Furuta was trapped in her classmate's house for 44 days, raped, burned by cigars and lighters, forced to consume cockroaches and urine, forced to pleasure herself in front of the classmate and his gang, had fireworks and knives shoved into all of her orifices, had wax poured all over her face, the ongoing torture caused her brain to physically shrink, her nipple was ripped off with a pair of plyers, she was shoved in a freezer, and beaten to a pulp every single one of those days by the classmate and his friends. And when an onlooker reported it to the police they went to the front door and the boy's parents answered. They told the officers that there was no girl in the house and there was no reason to investigate. The officers took that at face value and immediately left. Fucking disgusting from both ends. The parents knew this was going on in its entirety but deliberately lied to cover up for the son. You can't trust family members or the police
And yeah this isn't every case but it only makes you think about how many other cases were ignored this same way.
