I was born and raised in Canada. But my family comes from the Guangdong province :) Taishan specifically

With my family I speak the Taishan dialect. Outside of that mostly Cantonese. My Mandarin is only so-so.

I try to for the most part but my hubs doesn't speak it so sometimes I have to revert to English so he understands. How about you? Do you speak with your kids in either?

Nice nice! I'm hoping my daughter will learn Mandarin through schooling as she grows. But if she picks up either I'd be happy anyways :)

yeah that makes things a lot more difficult since if a person is not constantly using and speaking a language it soon falls apart
the good thing for us is we speak it at home

yeah I've seen a lot of my peers and younger people like that as well (and sometimes both their parents are chinese)

Quite a few of my friends are like that too. Luckily I was raised by my grandparents who didn't speak a lick of English apart from "Hello", so was forced to learn how to speak it at least.

I'm really hoping for my daughter as well. She spends a lot of time with my family, so hopefully one day she'll start speaking it without being told to speak it 😊
