MEGA TW FOR: Drug abuse alcohol abuse and or abuse of vapes or cigars, EDs and ED promotion, Depression and taking one's own life, sexism, homophobia, and transphobia
Recently I came across a K-tuber by the name Wonnieism. She seemed like a normal account but I decided to watch a video of hers and it just baffled me. I did a deep dive into this kid and HOLY SHIT was I taken aback.
Firstly I'll address their Kpop Opinions video and then go more in-depth about the channel.
One of the points they make in the video is that male idols' makeup is too much. I can agree that sometimes they go overboard and it doesn't look nice but I soon realized we weren't on the same page whatsoever. They use the section of the video to rant about how men shouldn't wear makeup because they look quote "zesty and unmanly" (these are her words exactly btw). If you didn't already know I think this is just plain nonsense. But Wonnieism also says it clashes badly with their masculine features which, dude, have you seen Bangchan? He wears makeup most of the time and not once has it made him look less manly. She also says her ult group is Enhyphen in her intro video when Enhyphen wears makeup all the time + the entire industry. The whole time I listened to this section I was thinking in my head "bestie, what are you yapping on about"
Another point she makes is that young idols who sign contracts with companies know what they're getting into, but that makes no sense. She also literally says "Just because you're 12 doesn't mean you're stupid" but dude I've met more half-brained 12-year-olds than super-intelligent 12-year-olds even though I was pretty smart for my age. Most little kids don't get the concept of the companies being abusive and controlling and just see the shiny stage and cute outfits that come with being an idol. But even if they do know beforehand, it doesn't make their struggles being in the field any less valid because you get struggles with most careers in entertainment.
Next, she just does the dumbest thing ever and claims Ill-It (HYBE's girl group from RU Joking) is copying IVE because their names sound similar and they both have a member whose name starts with Won (Wonhee and Wonyoung)
No words this is just silliness.
I checked her channel and saw a video titled "Clearing up things because I'm not egotistical"
I assumed that since she had that video up she got backlash for something prior. So I looked into her
She had lots of shorts up that just said very weird stuff. She's also an avid promotor of an internet culture called Wonyoungism, which I'll explain
Wonyoungism is the culture of working hard to achieve your goals, instilling confidence in yourself and others, and leading a healthy life as does Jang Wonyoung, hence the name. At least it should be, instead, it's become a toxic cult-like mentality that encourages ED behavior, colorism, classism, and even ableism at times. Wonnieissm is no stranger to this.
To quote one of her posts
"Fat models are not models. There's a standard, follow it."
She says demeaning things about fat people like this all the time and then turns around and says she is not fatphobic.
She also says that you can't change your gender and that she dislikes the "rainbow community" and trans and gay people in general. (god this girl does more d-riding than the gay men she claims to hate)
She also posted a far more controversial video which garnered much more backlash called "How to Fix These Problems"
One of her first points I took issue with was the one about abuse of things like cigs, vapes, alcohol, and drugs
Wonnieism says quote "If you have addictions to these things then please remember you were given this body to live in, not abuse it."
This isn't bad or in poor faith but just misses the mark. Drug abuse usually stems not from self-hatred but from stress or seeing peers do substances. So I don't think telling little Jimmy that his body wasn't made to have drugs in it will stop him from lighting up some heroin or downing Percocet at a party with his mates.
The next point however is worse. She says that if you have suicidal thoughts please remember you can always fix your life. This sounds good on its own but is tone-deaf in addition to all the other things she's said about depression which I'll leave for later. I find this to be unhelpful because being suicidal has more to do with mindset than anything honestly. You could be living in a pretty fuschia mansion on the edge of Los Angeles but still be depressed because YOU don't feel like you're good enough. She then goes on to say "You're not alone and this won't last forever"
Pretty rich coming from the same person who thinks depression can be cured by quote "going outside and touching grass" You said you found this out through research but your source clearly must be trustmebro.org because that's not how depression works. Staying inside can amplify feelings of depression but you can't just tell a depressed person to go outside when some if not most depressed people don't have the motivation to complete basic tasks OR EVEN LIVE.
(Kinda unrelated but she also claims others can't handle criticism but calls anyone who dares to criticize her a lazy fat pig)
She also made a post essentially saying she feels happy knowing she gets through life being hot and privileged while others need vapes and anti-depression medication to get through the day. Sincerely, FUCK YOU. Being a classist pick me isn't a fucking flex because all you do is put down others and talk about how gorg you are hoping that prince charming will see your egotistical behavior and wanna wife you down. And then looking down even further she told depressed people to "just be happy" at this point it would have been offensive for you to just spit on the graves of people who took their lives because that's what you do when you say shit like this. She also said that it's silly for gays and trans people to want acceptance when they "don't even accept themselves" She additionally tries to pass the narrative that schools are teaching people about drag queens when that is literally in zero US school curriculums and I live in Georgia and formerly New Jersey so I'd know.
And after all of this, she has the audacity to say "Before 2020 all of this stuff was normal to say"
No baby, I think you mean before 1964. It's not fucking normal for you to mock mental illnesses the lgbtq and fat people and promote disordered eating and then hide under the guise of "people nowadays are so sensitive" because it's not an excuse
And even people in her comments have called her out and she just deflects and
And she doesn't stop at random each passerby to her page she also hates on idols for their looks.
She outright says that if you're an idol and you gain weight you're violating the contract and are a bad idol
For you to apparently know so much about mental health you seem to forget that stress leads to weight gain and being an idol is stressful enough without people like you focusing on their every move. She's also directly said before that she thinks Liz, Jeongyeon, Sunoo, Jihyo, and Jiwoo are fat and liked a comment saying "Jeongyeon is coming after you" on a video of her talking about fat people being lazy
And the saddest part is most of her small but loyal fanbase is young and encouraged by what she says. They'll grow up thinking it's normal to not eat anything but salads and drink like a thousand cups of water in a single sitting and that depression isn't real and that they aren't worthy if they don't conform to standards
This is why, in my opinion, she should be off YouTube. So I urge if you're a subscriber of hers to unsubscribe and stop viewing her content
