I need to get back into writing, so why not post something sad af :ilovebread:

Winter
Xie Lian's small, icy fingers wormed their way into Hua Cheng's. Hua Cheng squeezed them, slowly rubbing warmth back into the frail hands that he had held so many times before. "It's too cold out here, Gege." Hua Cheng said worriedly. "Are you sure you don't want to go back inside? We can watch a movie or someth-"

"I don't want to watch a movie. I want to stay out here." Xie Lian's voice was as cold and sharp as the air around them. Hua Cheng nodded wordlessly. He didn't have the heart to do anything but what Xie Lian wished. Especially now, when he looked so sickly.

Spring
"Do you like this one, San Lang?" Xie Lian asked, holding up a long-stemmed, white rose.

Hua Cheng grimaced. "Too common."

Xie Lian rolled his eyes. "Red roses are too common. White roses aren't. They symbolize purity, you know."

Hua Cheng grinned and plucked the rose out of Xie Lian's hands and set it back on the stand. "Well, then you definitely don't need it."

Summer
"You know...you know...when someone is about to die, the people around them try to distance themselves to lessen the pain?" Xie Lian's voice was barely a whisper. Hua Cheng nodded silently. "Please stay with me, San Lang." Hua Cheng reached out to grab Xie Lian's hand, holding it tightly. He could hear Xie Lian struggling to breathe.

"I'm not gonna leave. Did you think I was going to?"

Xie Lian smiled slightly. "No. Just making sure." Silence filled the hospital room. It seemed like hours before Xie Lian spoke again. "Can I have my ring?"

"Your ring?" Hua Cheng's eyes flicked to the bedside table, where Xie Lian's wedding ring sat. It was slightly too big now that he had lost so much weight, and he didn't want to risk losing it. Hua Cheng picked it up, sliding it on Xie Lian's finger. The two shared a soft smile. Xie Lian was in no rush. They had time.

Autumn
It'd been too long since Hua Cheng was last here. The blue irises he left last time were wilted and rotten, the petals scattered on the ground and smashed. Weeds were growing at the base of Xie Lian's headstone. Dropping to his knees, Hua Cheng started to rip them out guiltily. He should have been there before the flowers got ugly, before the invasive plants tried to destroy his love's resting place. He didn't stop until his vision was blurry with tears and his shoulders shook. He wiped his trembling hands on his pants, leaving behind streaks of dirt.

"I-I'm sorry." He whispered. "The groundskeeper should be taking care of your grave, Gege. I'll talk to the cemetery staff." Hua Cheng brushed his fingers across Xie Lian's name, trying, once again, to not fall apart. "My quack of a grief counselor says I'm not allowed to spend hours out here anymore. So I have to go now, but I'll be back next week? Or sooner." He stood up, brushing the dirt off his pants and laying a dozen white roses next to Xie Lian's headstone.
