We've [most] have criticized Twilight in past posts and almost every psychotherapist and feminist who has made a video or made literary analysis which I had to read in English class and be bored my brains out... They have done this.. but one thing I've never really seen is a discussion of this:

Twilight is a book [at least the first] that tries to do romance with a pseudo-thriller sub plot. Bella starts out within pages describing herself as a plain jane. Also, within her first meeting with her love interest he looks at her in a way that makes her question herself to the point where she almost starts to cry... I won't go into a section by section break down because, well, its my day off... But moving on, we get subtle hints that he may be a vampire as well as certain points where the main character's life is in danger only to be saved by the love interest. The fact that she's this danger prone would have been great if the author made her cursed by an evil witch or something. Thus, explaining her excessive clumsiness. But we don't really get a hint of any real action until the last section of the book. There is no build up besides that she is hanging out with vampires and vampires are dangerous therefore a vampire happens upon her, thinks she's a snack, and then they go through a couple chapters saving her. I think that the author based the book around a dream she had that was featured a "scene" with a human and a vampire in a romantic environment shows that the thriller aspect is really an afterthought.

I've read a lot of YA, which my book closet can attest to and while many include plots of romance I cannot think of any others that have a supernatural element, but fail to use it in a meaningful way and sacrifice much of an actual thought out plot in lieu of a romance plot. The Raven Cycle, Vampire Academy, and The Mortal Instruments all include romance to some degree, but don't sacrifice the plot for its sake.

Anyways.. Your thoughts... Do/Did you enjoy the thriller-esque sub plots within the series? Were they forced?
