So here's the story
Woman runs out of gas and can't make it home so a homeless veteran gives her his last $20.
The woman is so touched that she and her husband start a GoFundMe, only asking for $10,000 to help the man get back on his feet. They were going to use the money for an old truck and rent for an apartment.
They actually managed to raise $400,000
For a while it seemed like a nice, feel good story where the internet came together to do some good.
But
A few months later, the homeless man files a lawsuit against the couple, claiming that they were holding his funds hostage, only bought him a camper in their name instead of a truck or an apartment, and were using the money on new cars and vacations.
The couple claimed that the homeless man blew 25k on drugs and they would give him the money when he got clean and a maintained a job. The whole thing becomes a media spectacle
A judge rules in favor of the homeless man and order the couple to return the remaining fundings.
Only one problem
All the money was gone.
The police get involved, search the couple's home and seize their cars. GoFundMe promises to give the homeless man the rest of his money at their expense.
And guess what came out today?
THE WHOLE THING WAS A HOAX.
The couple and the homeless didn't meet the way they said they did, they had known each other for months.
All three plotted together to make the GoFundMe, probably not expecting it to go over the limit the way that it did. Only someone got greedy. When the homeless man only got 75k and blew it on drugs, he used the story to his advantage and tried to take it all. Those three scammed over 11k generous people just wanting to do right by a vet
And the most fucked up thing?
We'd never have known about it if the homeless hadn't gotten cocky and sued
