oomf managed to buy an advanced copy of sica’s new books so I’m basing this thread off what he said. I’m using the actual snsd member names since it’s fairly obvious which character is a stand in for who

- the members forced jessica out of the group with an ultimatum because their parents didn’t like that she had her own fashion brand and was profiting off the group name
- she is down bad bad for tyler, unreasonably so
- apparently taengsic fans might have a field day with it though because of how oddly taeyeon is written at times + how she gets more characterization than even jessica
- apparently it’s written worse than shine but he still recommends it for how unhinged it is
- nothing really gets exposed if you’ve paid enough attention to what happened irl, except that she’s hell bent on making herself look good
- both he and that reddit person agree that in her efforts to come off as the good guy, she comes off as really unlikeable

but I agree that taengsic shippers will have fun if the teen vogue extract is anything to go by
I was honestly really meh with shine (as you can probably search up) but the more I think about the implied mina (a minor) had sex with an exec to debut as leader the more I’m unimpressed with the whole series tbh
I don’t doubt that’s a thing at all, that one ex johnny did say something similar, but when characters are so obviously modelled after real life people and you factor in that the stand in character is a minor, then it’s just gross how it’s made that mina was in the wrong

yeah, he said it was basically the dispatch leak thing except a lot more one-sided
instead of a few members who didn't really want to push for the ultimatum and several rounds of negotiations, it was a really quick decision that all the other members pushed for
basically: the rumours have been mostly true, no actual reveals in the book, read it only if you like the messiness of it all or enjoy the homoerotic undertones of rachel/mina

Yeah, when i watched video of the parents being behind it was when i compartmentalised my brain: i literally had to separate my thinking to still be able to enjoy/like/appreciate OT8 after knowing/learning this version; tho iv reconciled myself to not ever knowing the truth-just this plausible possibility floating ard in my head made me go full on conspiracy paranoid.

Ill read Bright n decide l8r tho. I dint see 1 to 1 parallels in Shine, n discussion of Shine iv read on SONE discord server is rlly chill. Not sure if anyone read Bright there yet tho, just the excerpt i think.(is an ARC out already tho?)

I read the excerpt last yr, n Shine b4 tat.

I could not see any parallels between OT8 n any Girls Forever (had to google grp name cos its so generic) members/trainees.

I overlooked tat Bright was coming out in May 2022; id mis-temporally brained tat it was delayed 1 yr, but tat is already past-2021. Im discombobulated tat Shine came out in 2020(in my memory its like : dint it just come out/i thot i read it like just mths ago; tho iv forgotten lots of the deets).

Ill read it for myself after its out. Then on to Book 3 "Like a Star" LOL!

Mina isnt Taeyeon though. She doesn't really have any characteristics that can be attributed to any of the members, more of the stereotypical mean girl. Most sones I've seen have made her into a Sooyoung/Sunny based sheerly on the fact that she's rich.

Mina was bitchy but she had a pretty good reason for being like that because she was desperate to please her father and would do anything to debut. I think Mina was a dancer, either way most of them just don't have enough personality for me to make any connections, Taeyeon least of all. It's pretty obvious there are connections that can be made from the books to her real life but not everything. Maybe Bright will have clearer characterization for the other girls but honestly probably not.

Shine/Bright is supposed to be Children's/tween and most of the books I read at that age had main characters like Rachel in the fact they were pretty one dimensional with very few complexes. I can't really say Rachel is a Mary Sue with the amount of mistakes and situations she ends up due to her own mistakes. She doesn't dance well, she has pretty bad stage fright, she's just as shitty and immature as the other girls and pretty much open from the beginning that the others are right to not like her. Girlie is a mess

I honestly think it's 50/50
I'm fairly sure she has a ghostwriter behind her and fed some main points to go off of, and it'd honestly be hard not to add in some personal experiences/stories she'd heard over the years imo
but the drugging and everything I think was just added in to make the book "darker", I would be concerned if trainee competition got that toxic

she did say she wanted some Netflix live action so I’m assuming that’s where the “darker” themes come into play
ya lit has an odd obsession with wanting to seem mature when the author can’t handle those themes well that I wish stopped
