I have looked over everyone’s forms and added up the shells earned for the first mini game: “Is it True or False?” Remember this is only the shells earned from this mini game, not your teams overall score (which may I say you’re all doing awesome with earning your team points).


The Deep Sea Pod has collected: 30 shells, while your team did wonderful the Coastal Pod team managed to collect just a bit more and ended up collecting: 38 shells. Great job everyone!

-Dolphins can only breathe through their blowhole
This is false, a Hectors dolphin was reported to have learned to breathe through it’s mouth. Because of this they had to surface more often than others. Other dolphins have been reported doing this as well. Researchers believe it was something the dolphins had to learn after an injury.

-There are 40 existing species of dolphins
This is true, most species live in shallow waters of tropical and temperate oceans. Five species live in rivers.

-A dolphins pod will assist in a mother’s birth if necessary
This is true, a female dolphin will assist in the birth of another’s baby dolphin, and if it is a difficult birth, the “midwife” might help pull out the baby. Other dolphins, including bulls, will swim around the mother during the birth to protect her. Honestly such an amazing animal.

-Dolphins can expel air from their blowhole at speeds over 60 mph
This is true, air can be expelled from a dolphin’s blowhole at speeds topping 100 mph!

-All dolphins live in the ocean
This is false, most dolphins we see and hear of are all in ocean environments, but there’s at least five different river dolphin species struggling to survive in their habitats. A river dolphin species was determined to be extinct around 2006 and most of the others are headed towards the same route. All of this is because of humans, river dolphins are often hunted to be later used as bait, other things such as pollution, noise, dangerous boats, overfishing and rivers that are being drained by irrigation are just a few problems they face.

-Orcas first started getting captured in the early 1960’s for entertainment purposes.
This is true, in just the first few years of this practice almost 100 young orcas were captured. Orcas became a popular attraction because of their appearance, size, trainability, intelligence and playfulness. There hasn’t been a baiji dolphin seen for 20 years though some people still hold onto that there might be a small number somewhere that they can use to repopulate the rivers.

This is false, well sort of, dolphins are born with a set of 25 teeth however their teeth are very unique and constantly grow throughout their lifespan, they produce growth layers in the root so they actually have layers and layers of teeth. It’s similar to how you tell the age of a tree, by looking at the lines once it’s cut. This is how scientists can tell a dolphin's age. A dolphin can have over 100 teeth!

This was a question that was pretty 50/50 with everyone tbh I’ve seen that where it says 55 but decided to go with 50 after seeing that that’s what most sources said.
