Today is the USA’s day for endangered animals! Therefore, as a team, we have decided to bring awareness to animals that have gone extinct or are on the path to extinction. We have prepared 10 cards, as well as a short informational thread about each animal. The animals and threads will be listed below. Now you may be wondering, how do I earn these cards? The answer is you must reply to this thread with an endangered/extinct animal or environmental conservation fact to get the ability to earn animal cards. You only have to do this once, however, you still have to do your daily to earn the card. You may still earn up to 3 cards a day on free card day and 2 on normal days, but only one card a day can be an animal card. You may post your fact at any point during this event, but we recommend posting the first day to earn as many animal cards as possible. The event will last one week. Well now I can choose between being disappointed an available Charizard, Lugia, Rayquaza or Squirtle don't drop and getting cards of actual animals

My fact: There is a patch of garbage called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. It involves large amounts of debris floating in the Pacific Ocean. It can be difficult to measure because much of it is made of microplastics, which are difficult to see. These plastics can cause problems when animals eat them, get stuck in the nets/other larger debris, or are unable to receive sunlight due to these plastics blocking it. These plastics also leach out certain chemicals and absorb certain pollutants that are unhealthy for the animals who consume them, as well as eventually the other animals that consume those animals, and eventually even humans.

It was very pretty, sadly not the first or last animal to go extinct in large part due to overhunting.

Macaws
Macaws are one of the most charismatic and colorful species you’ll find in South America. Members of the larger parrot family, their size and vivid plumage, along with their rather loud behavior, make them hard to miss amongst the rainforest canopy. You can find this beautifully-bright tropical bird throughout the Amazon and Pantanal regions.

Almost all macaw species are either threatened, critically endangered or extinct
Scientists have identified a total of 22 species of macaws. Of these, five are extinct (including the glaucus macaw and Spix’s macaw), three are critically endangered (the hyacinth macaws, red-fronted macaws and blue-throated macaws), four are listed as endangered, whilst all the rest are considered to be under threat. This pessimistic state of affairs is largely a product of illegal trapping for the bird trade. The birds’ charisma and entertainment value has made them popular pets worldwide. As with many other Amazon bird species and wildlife, deforestation and habitat degradation also pose a significant threat to population numbers, as seen recently by the devastating fires in the Pantanal that have ravaged the realm and number of Hyacinth macaws.

My fact: Isthmohyla rivularis is the rare species of tree frog in the world. It has only been spotted once, in Costa Rica, in the past twenty five years. This frog was found in the foothills of the Turrialba Volcano, meaning that it lived at a higher altitude than previously thought.

Yellow-eyed penguins are seriously threatened by food shortages resulting from sea-temperature changes driven by global warming. Populations have also suffered from loss of natural breeding habitat, high chick mortality due to predation by introduced mammals, and gillnet entanglement.

Saving rare species from extinction requires extraordinary measures. The black-footed ferret is one of North America’s most endangered mammals. Once thought to be extinct, after the species was rediscovered in Wyoming in 1981, concerted efforts by numerous partners have given black-footed ferrets a second chance for survival. Captive breeding, reintroductions, habitat protection, and cloning have helped restore them to over 300 animals in the wild. Although great strides have been made to recover the black-footed ferret, habitat loss and disease remain their key threats. Biologists estimate that there should be 3,000 adult ferrets in the wild to successfully recover this endangered species.

Here's a pretty unique fact

Chelonoidis niger phantasticus (commonly known as the Fernandina Island Galápagos tortoise or Narborough Island giant tortoise) is a subspecies of Galápagos tortoise that was discovered in 1906 and thought extinct, until a single female was discovered living on Fernandina Island by an expedition in February 2019. In May 2021, a genetic test carried out by scientists from the California Academy of Sciences confirmed that the single female tortoise discovered in 2019 is from the subspecies Chelonoidis niger phantasticus.
